Fotograaf Roderik Henderson (1964) heeft de eerste prijs World Press Photo 2010 Portraits / Portretten, categorie Stories / Verhalen gewonnen. Vijf portretten uit deze serie zijn nog tot 15 maart te zien in de Gemak-tentoonstelling: MIJN Publieke Ruimte / “… to find empriness in citiscapes”.

Henderson isoleert in zijn werk sublieme, existentiële momenten van verlatenheid; de indringende In the car autoportretten leggen confronterende, intieme en toevallige ontmoetingen vast op desolate parkeerplaatsen met passanten, misfits, loners, net als hij op dat moment on the road in Canada en Noord-Amerika.

In zijn korte autobiografie-brief Chronology schrijft Henderson:

“From 1998 on, I roamed the American Southwest for years, together with my wife Tanja. Living in a beaten up jeep wagoneer and a small argosy travel trailer we explored the desert, searching for the lucidity of naked rock, burning sand and roaring silence. No thoughts, no dreams, no ambitions – only absolute, sublime nothingness. Salt flats and lava fields were what we called home.”
“But soon my naive search turned into a photographic inventory of traces of recent human activity in the deserts of Nevada, California, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and West Texas. […]”
“We moved to the wilderness of British Columbia, Canada. A place without grocery stores, electricity, phone, television or neighbors. Weeks would pass without seeing anyone. We became a crowd of four when our baby Sid was born. To get to the nearest town, we drove almost three hours one way through mud, snow or ice.
I started photographing other people who had to spent lots of time in their vehicles. A Native family from a first nations reserve going to town on Friday. A priest giving a sermon in a small church in a remote valley. A couple who couldn’t afford the rent of their apartment anymore and were now actually living in their car. A guy slowly dying on a parking lot. A guy traveling to see his sick brother on the other side of the continent.”

Sinds januari 2010 is Roderik Henderson met familie opnieuw – voor onbepaalde tijd – vertrokken, nu op existentiële en artistieke zoektocht in Chili.

MIJN Publieke Ruimte / “…to find emptiness in cityscapes” / 23 januari – 14 maart 2010
De tentoonstelling MIJN Publieke Ruimte / “…to find emptiness in cityscapes” geeft ruimte aan kunstenaars die zich in hun werk de volle leegte van de publieke ruimte weten toe te eigenen of zodanig te scannen dat ze een nieuwe betekenis weten te geven aan wat vanzelfsprekend lijkt. Werk dat publiek en passanten kan inspireren om ook zelf anders – persoonlijker, kritischer en creatiever – met het publieke, maar toch uiterst persoonlijke buitendomein om te gaan.

De deelnemende kunstenaars observeren de openbare ruimte, registreren, accentueren, vergroten wat ze hier aantreffen uit, zoomen in, reflecteren op wat hen opvalt, verzamelen data van hun stedelijke en virtuele verkenningen, nemen geluid op, nemen de stad de maat, maken (aan)tekeningen; ze gebruiken kortom de openbare ruimte als een logische extensie van de persoonlijke belevingswereld. De tentoonstelling MIJN Publieke Ruimte / “…to find emptiness in cityscapes” nodigt het publiek uit deze persoonlijke aanpak in overweging te nemen en ook zelf eens uit te proberen.
