Waiting for August (directed by Teodora Ana Mihai)
Movie Screening, Cake & Talk (free entrance)
It is every child’s fantasy to be home alone and be able to do what he or she wants. But when this becomes the every day life, being home alone is no longer ideal.
Multiple award winner documentary Waiting for August tells the bitter-sweet story of seven children who live by themselves in Bacau, Romania. Their mother works in Italy and comes home twice a year. Their story flows between a sweet and idyllic freedom and the bitterness of seeing their mother only on webcam while waiting for her return in August.
The focus lays on fifteen year old Georgiana who is “in charge” while her mother is away. Torn between adolescence and heavy responsibilities, the teenage girl struggles to keep everyone afloat.
The film is accompanied by cake and drinks and will be followed by a discussion.
The screening is organized by Platform Spartak and it’s part of the Ulysses’ Gaze project, part of which we organize a series of monthly screenings of films from Eastern Europe, mainly focused on migration.
