The textimages of Tanja Smit explore and transform already existing printed texts in newspapers, magazines and books. They consist of simple, repetitive manual interventions that show underlaying and new structures and meanings of the text. The initial works are small scale, drawn directly upon the original printed text. In exhibitions and performances they are often presented by means of projections or reprints on banners. Since 2006 the textimages also function as graphic scores. They are performed in settings that vary from theaters to exhibitions. In 2011 the Music In Language Ensemble has been founded, a cooperation between Tanja Smit and Anne Wellmer. It consists of a nuclear group of six professional musicians, all composers performers, that adapt their number regarding the context of each performance.
